Before you go to Ireland, check out the following:
- Some absolute screen legends have hailed from the Emerald Isle and the country itself makes a fantastic backdrop for TV shows and movies.
- Want to read up a bit on Ireland before you depart? No matter what genre you prefer, this guide has recommendations!
- Familiarize yourself with some Irish Folk music – songs you’re likely to hear at the pub or maybe played by the buskers in the street.
- Craic (pronounced ‘crack’) is a word you’ll probably hear a lot. It can mean “fun” or “gossip”. For a bit more about how and when you might notice its use, give this a read.
- If you happen upon a crowd along the backroads, there’s a decent chance they could be Road Bowling!
- You’ll probably take a lot of pictures on your trip. Here’s a video we loved that gives some simple tips and tricks for making your photos “pop”!
- Are you planning to rent a car? Here’s what you need to know.
- Know your history!
Did You Know?
- For a true Irish culinary experience, try one of these foods: a Tayto Sambo, a spice bag, a chipper, a Carvery or head to an Irish Deli (really!).
- Keep it casual. You don’t need to bring any fancy outfits along on your trip. The Irish aren’t big on formal wear so as long as you have some layers for the changing weather, you’ll be in great shape.
- Northern Ireland (part of the United Kingdom) uses the Pound sterling and the Republic of Ireland uses the Euro…just something to keep in mind if you’re visiting both places.
- Don’t forget your manners at home. Hold the door open for the person behind you, give a warm smile when passing someone on the street, give a handshake or a gentle wave to those you’re meeting for the first time. And put your phone down at pubs – enjoy the experience and the conversation.
- Ever heard of the “rounds system”? If someone buys you a drink, you MUST buy them one back (and make sure they have a new one in front of them before they’re finished with their first!)
- It’s a good idea to carry some local currency with you, especially for purchasing those souvenirs in small towns.
- Be sure to look RIGHT when crossing the street!
