The Czech Republic is a wonderful family vacation destination straight out of fairy tales.
Although small in size, this central european country boasts 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites. You will find picturesque cities, world class architecture, romantic castles, and beautiful countryside in this “rich” country.
Czech Republic’s location in the middle of europe has resulted in a turbulent past. Raiding tribes, conquering armies and triumphant dynasties have left a legacy of more than 2,000 castles and chateaux throughout the country. From remains of grim Gothic structures, to well preserved majestic Baroque mansions, and turreted fortresses, Czech castles bring history to life.
Prague is one of Europe’s most fascinating cities, and is a great place to begin your Czech adventure!
The well preserved Gothic architecture will transport you back 500 years. Walking through the historic city center, you will see why this is called the “City of the Thousand Spires”. Romantic narrow streets, and amazing variety of architectural styles make Prague truly a magical place. The city is easily walkable and you can see the most famous monuments in the historical center.
The Astronomical clock, “Prague Orloj”, dates back to 1410 and is touted to be the oldest clock still operating. Every hour the clock draws attention when it chimes and the window opens to show the ‘walk of the apostles’. Local legend is that the city will suffer if the clock is neglected. So there’s good probability you will be able to see this wonderful spectacle during your visit. The 14th century Charles Bridge is an iconic symbol of the city and is a breathtaking afternoon or evening walk. You will find the fascinating, Prague Castle standing majestically above the city. A super interesting Gothic 9th century structure, it should definitely be on your “must see” list. Plan an afternoon here to learn about the significance of this castle, as well as enjoy the gorgeous views.
Beyond Prague, the Czech Republic has lots more to offer.
Cesky Krumlov is a beautiful little medieval town a short drive or train ride away. It has a fairytale 14th century, historic center, built around the Cesky Krumlov Castle which was designated as a Unesco Heritage site in 1992. Your tribe will love exploring the castle as well as the spectacular gardens. Be sure to save time to wander the narrow streets and shops too. The Vltava river runs through the town and provides a wonderful (and popular!) kayaking opportunity as well.
This little country is also a great place for cycling. There are many country roads full of vineyards and farms, and picturesque villages waiting for your curiosity and energy! Local trains are equipped with bike racks, making it easy when you get tired. Walking paths and organized walking tours are also popular and a great way to ‘get off the beaten path’ and get to know the countryside.
Delicious food and drink….
Czech culture is rich with traditions, and you will see this clearly in the cuisine. You will be able to find all kinds of foods here, and especially Prague has become an emerging foodie destination. Traditional Czech food typically includes hearty soups and comfort type main dishes with meat such as pork, beef, or chicken. You will fall in love with ‘Knedliky’, traditional dumplings which come filled with anything you can think of! A typical sweet ending to the meal is apple strudel, often served warm with whipped cream… yum! And did you know that the Czech Republic is the birthplace of modern beer? They invented the ‘pilsner’ type beers, and are still known as the heaviest beer drinkers in the world! If you are a beer lover, you will be able to explore all kinds of delicious brews here. Its common to share tables at Czech pubs, so its a great place to go for a casual dinner to meet locals.
