Did You Know?
- Drinking fountains are PLENTIFUL so bring your refillable water bottles!
- Public restrooms are also widely available. You might need to pay a few Euros to use them, but they tend to be a lot cleaner than those you find at home.
- You might want to take part in the tradition of the aperitivo. This cultural ritual consists of a pre-dinner drink meant to “open” the stomach prior to dinner. Cin cin!
- Expect lunch breaks (stores & restaurants close) in smaller cities and the countryside from 1-4pm.
- When ordering drinks: cappuccinos are for breakfast; espresso = anytime; order caffeellatte for an ‘American latte’ otherwise you’ll get milk; and for an iced coffee order caffe shakerato.
- You will likely need to ask for the bill at a restaurant. Italians typically love to sit and chat while they digest.
- If the gelato is stacked high, stay away! Find the shops where the treat comes just to the top of the container.
- Don’t forget scarfs, pashminas and/or sweaters to cover shoulders as a sign of respect at religious sites.
