It’s VERY tempting to pack the biggest suitcase possible for overseas trips. We get it – you want to make sure you have everything you could possibly need, plus some extra shirt, shoe and dress options, right? We’re here to tell you that you can take JUST A CARRY-ON for trips that are even upwards of 4 weeks long. Here’s how and why:

HOW TO PACK

  • If you’re heading abroad, make sure your carry-on is no more than 21-22 inches high.
  • Roll your clothes, use packing cubes or compression bags (but watch the weight!).
  • Put smaller items INSIDE shoes.
  • Wear your bulkiest items on the plane.
  • Keep it simple – bring clothes in the same color palette that can be layered.
    • Follow the 5-4-3-2-1 rule: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 pairs of shoes, 2 dresses/jackets, 1 swimsuit (adjust as needed).
  • Always bring a scarf – you can use it anywhere: if it’s cold on the plane, dressing up an outfit, covering up at sacred sites…

WHY USE JUST A CARRY-ON?

  • Avoid the ever increasing checked baggage fees.
  • Skip baggage claim abroad AND when you return home (it’s SO nice to go from the gate right to your car).
  • No lost luggage – your suitcase will always be with you.
  • Easier mobility. Breeze through airports and maneuver through crowds.
  • It encourages you to pack light!

THINGS WE FIT IN JUST A CARRY-ON for a 1-week trip:

  • 7 shirts, 7 pants, 2 sweatshirts, 2 pairs of shoes, PJ’s, socks, intimates, First Aid Kit & a Dopp Kit

“When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.”
