When you think of the Netherlands so many incredible sights come to mind. Maybe you think of the countryside, with scattered windmills, grassy green pastures, and tulips as far as the eye can see! Or perhaps you think of cobblestone streets, with tall and thin architecture, where colorful buildings line the streets. Having been named the sixth “happiest place on earth”, the Netherlands should definitely be on your ‘bucket list’!
From north to south, and east to west, this small country is filled with family friendly fun!
The Netherlands is truly a mix of old traditions and cutting edge innovation and design. With its charming cities, beautiful countrysides, and world-leading cultural attractions, this small country has something for everyone. Getting around the country is also exceptionally easy with an efficient and extensive train system. Also, if you love cycling, you will feel right at home here. Roughly half of all Dutch citizens ride a bike on a daily basis, and bicycles outnumber people in many Dutch cities. As a result, most of the country is accessible by bicycle and cycling paths are easy and abundant. Can you see your family cycling through the Dutch countryside?
Here’s some reasons to start planning your Netherlands vacation now:
- Canals, Tulips, and Windmills. Canals were the original transportation routes, and Amsterdam’s iconic canal system has been declared Unesco Heritage. The Dutch have cultivated tulips for centuries, and you will see signs of this everywhere – from the beautiful farmlands throughout the country to the famous Amsterdam floating flower market. The windmill is perhaps the most iconic symbol of the Netherlands. One of the best places to learn all about Dutch windmills is ‘Zaanse Schans’. An open air museum about 20 minute train ride from Amsterdam. This 17th century village will give you the chance to explore authentic windmills, and also learn about Clog making and Cheese making. Are you ready to go?
- Music and Art. The Netherlands has produced many world renowned artists, and most cities have wonderful museums to display this heritage. Watch your child’s art history grades improve after seeing some Rembrandt, Van Gogh, or Bosch paintings in person! The Dutch love music and all genres are represented at the many music festivals, concerts, and cafes throughout the country. Whether you enjoy the excitement of an international music festival or the charm of a small music venue, you will find it year round in the Netherlands.
- Engineering and Design Dutch innovation and engineering is evident in all corners of this beautiful country. With about 1/3 of the country below sea level, citizens have always had to be creative to deal with this. Zeeland has been recognized as one of the “seven wonders of the modern world” for its design and construction of giant sea walls which raised huge areas out of the sea. If you have any budding engineers in your tribe, a visit to ‘Delta Works’ in this area will provide loads of inspiration!
- Cheese and Beer The delicious Gouda and Edam cheeses originated in the Netherlands, and can be found (and tasted!) throughout the country. Beautiful food markets give you the chance to sample these and other delicious Dutch cheeses, as well as some of the many local beers. The Dutch are proud of their food heritage and love sharing with visitors!
Amsterdam is a great home base, with easy and affordable day trips to many other cities / attractions.
Here’s a few of our favorite activities for an Unforgettable vacation in Netherlands. Hop on the train for 45 minute ride to Rotterdam, a modern and contemporary city filled with great architecture, and use water taxis to take you everywhere! Take a day trip (by train) through the countryside and stop off in the town of Delft to ‘paint your own dutch tiles’. There’s truly an activity to match everyone’s interest here.
